Stone walls, lush fields with grazing animals, and the Lake District fells create a delightful backdrop for walking and touring, and only minutes' drive away are the tea rooms and clog makers of Caldbeck village, whose famous son 'D'ye ken John Peel' is buried there. Bassenthwaite Lake, Derwentwater by Keswick, treetop adventure courses in Whinlatter's forest and the cathedral and castle in the Border city of Carlisle are all within about a half hour's drive. A pub serving food and post office are about 500 yards, Greystoke village shop is 4 miles, and more extensive shopping, cinema and a leisure centre with climbing wall are found in the market town of Penrith (6 miles).

The Lake District has the highest hills in England, including Scafell Pike, the country’s highest point. And of course there are the lakes themselves: glorious Windermere, pretty Derwent Water and beautiful Ullswater are just some of the highlights of our Cumbria and the Lakes cottage holidays.
For the historically minded, Cumbria offers a wealth of Celtic monuments, Roman remains, stately homes and ruined abbeys. Carlisle still has some of its ancient walls standing, as well as a Norman castle, and the western part of Hadrian’s Wall is nearby. Other places of interest include Penrith, with its castle and remarkably unchanged market square; Keswick, which was once the centre of pencil manufacturing; the busy market town of Kendal and Cockermouth, Wordsworth’s birthplace
